Day in Dubrovnik

Day in Dubrovnik

Early Birds

We got up early yesterday to get the 6:45 ferry into Dubrovnik from the island of Kolocep where we are anchored. Being a Unesco heritage city steeped in history and of course the set of GOT’s King’s Landing – we weren’t going to miss this opportunity.

City Wall

Walking the city wall is one of the highlights to the visit, ignoring everybody else doing the same thing. We went as soon as it opened at 8am in order to miss the afternoon heat and the crowds. It was still busy, but the long queues of people lining up to buy tickets to get in, as we were leaving justified the dawn raid.

Paying over the top for stuff, goes with cities, and Dubrovnik is no exception. For us the big smoke visits are an exception and we pick them selectively. Dubrovnik was worth it.

Cable Car and Museums

The kids loved the cable car, and we loved the view at the top. We dived into an Irish Pub for lunch and then took in the Natural History Museum, which was pretty weird and had fish painted as Freddie Mercury, or the other way round. It was good to beat the heat, and they had a kids’ play area with all sorts of things to keep the kids busy. We tried the Naval Museum but were followed around the whole time by museum assistants worried that the kids might break something, so we left pretty quickly.

Swimming at the City Wall

Outside the city wall was a perfect spot to cool of and take a dip. The boys loved jumping of a wall into the water. At a height of about 3 metres, it got the attention of surprised passers-by.

Homeward Bound

After a long day we made our way home. Which was another bus and ferry ride away. The bus driver found it appropriate to shout at me after my ticket didn’t work. We’d bought day passes that were supposed to cover all of the main attractions and public transport for the day. For the sake of a couple of euros and a long line of people behind me, I just bought another ticket.

The tranquility of the boat awaited us as we got back.
