We are still in Grand Cayman – The Cayman Islands´ main island – but we moved from Georgetown to Governors Creek. We had enough of cruise ships blaring their horns – although one ship tooted the tune of the Love Boat, which was good fun, once. Plus, there were high winds in the forecast and we wanted somewhere more sheltered.
Navigating the Shallows
So we ventured into Grand Cayman´s North Sound. This is a large sheltered bay, fringed by reefs. Navigation is tricky because the cut through the reefs is narrow and shallow. Plus, once you are in the sound, it´s still very shallow in most places. Add to that the fact that we are not entirely sure what our draught is (yes I know, we should have measured it during our last haul-out, but we forgot, or measure it in the water now, but we´re too lazy)… and you can imagine that we were pretty nervous coming in. We went slowly, and on a rising tide, and we made it!
New Neighbourhood
We spent two days anchored on the south side of the bay, which wasn´t the best place because it was choppy and there was not much to do on land in the area. So, we picked up the anchor and ventured into Governors Creek, through another shallow channel, with fingers crossed and buttocks clenched (sorry), and we made it again! We now find ourselves in a lovely, sheltered little bay, near a small marina, a big supermarket, Seven-Mile Beach, and surrounded by some of the most expensive real estate in the world. The villas (or should I say mansions) here are ridiculous. I´m not jealous at all…
We soon met some of the other boaters here. One of them lives aboard on his sailboat in the marina and works as a tour guide on a jet ski. He stopped by to offer the kids a ride. They jumped at the chance and had an amazing time! Thank you Davey!
A Trip to the Cinema
We went to see Star Wars IX in the cinema today! It´s quite a rare treat for us to be somewhere where there is a) a cinema and b) they show films in English (or Dutch but that would be a stretch…). The cinema is in Camana Bay, which is a posh pedestrian area with shops, restaurants and a lovely fountain for kids to play in. They also have a lookout tower, a little bay with a ¨desert island¨ and a small marina. It reminded us of our time in Qatar – it´s all new and high-end and there seem to be a lot of expats here too.
Wonderful as always xxx
When does it rain? ! Always looks so idyllic. Another gorgeous spot.
