Bye Bye in Bequia
In Bequia we had said goodbye to our friends on Nikau. They have to travel faster than us, since they plan to go through Panama Canal and sail their boat all the way back to New Zealand. It has been amazing hanging out with this cool family. They make fantastic videos – check them out here – and they really got us into doing more snorkeling and diving. We will miss these guys!
Now sailing with only two other boats – Boag and Mrs. Chippy -, our next destination would be Cumberland Bay on Saint Vincent. We had heard a lot about this island, both good and bad. Time to check it out for ourselves!
Party on the coconut trees
The thing to do in this bay is to drop anchor while you reverse into the bay towards a coconut tree. Then you tie a line to the tree to keep the boat facing stern-to to the shore. Luckily there are always guys around to help out – the so-called boat boys. In this part of the Caribbean, there is usually a whole welcoming committee of guys in small boats, selling fruits, vegetables, bread, jewellery, taxi services, you name it! Sometimes they can be pushy or annoying, especially when you’re trying to focus on parking the boat, but mostly they are friendly, and a source of local information. They’re just trying to make a living. We usually buy a little from everyone.
We had been looking forward to parking the boats stern-to and rafting up alongside each other for quite a while. After the three boats were all tied to the trees and to each other, it was time for a party! Mrs. Chippy bought some lobsters for the BBQ from one of the boat boys, and Max got busy mixing piña coladas. While the kids swam and climbed from boat to boat, the grownups had fun talking and drinking. The night ended with us all getting together to play our favourite songs and dance around the deck.
The next day was a quiet affair. We swam to clear our heads, and some went ashore. There were only a few houses in the bay, so there was not much to explore here, but that was okay for us. The appeal of this place lies in the beautiful views and the relaxed atmosphere. We had a blast!
