More Old Stones
This winter we plan to explore Sicily in a series of little road trips. The first road trip led us to the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento. More ancient Greek temples for us, yay! Or, as Kai would put it: more old stones that we are not allowed to climb on… *sigh*
Greek Temples in Sicily
A number of imposing Greek temple remains dot the Sicilian landscape. Greek settlers started founding cities throughout Sicily from the 8th century BC. Off course they brought their cultural influences and… built temples! Apparently some of the Greek temples here in Sicily are in better condition than those in Greece.
Excited to see some of this splendour, we piled into our Fiat Panda one Sunday morning to drive the long, scenic route (which is the only route) to Agrigento. We were not disappointed: the valley in its entirety is an impressive site. The actual temples are beautifully dotted around the valley and going from one to the next makes for a lovely wander around. The kids had fun running along, playing with their new action figures! This gave us a chance to have a good look at everything. We even had time to read some of the plaques with information! Success all around.
