Our first Polynesian atoll – Fakarava

We left Nuku Hiva and headed to Fakarava in the Tuamotos. According to Max, I got my dream come true as we’ve picked up an lovely young Italian guy hitchhiking his way across the Pacific. Luca sailed with us to Fakarava, stayed on board with us for a while there, and then moved onto find work there at a kitesurfing school. He was great fun, and he watched the kids one night (pizza night!) so Max and I could go out!

Fakarava is our first Pacific atoll. It was really cool to sail into the pass and be within the ring of the coral reef. Even with good wind for sailing, there were no more waves! A really great place for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

We went on a beautiful drift snorkel from the pass. All we had to do was dinghy to the end of the pass, switch the engine off and jump off the dinghy in our snorkeling gear. We then held onto a line to the dinghy and drifted past this beautiful coral reefs. With sharks sleeping on the bottom below us!

We went for a bike ride around the island – easy and flat and now way to get lost. We did get hot so stopped for a swim. Life is pretty good here. As the name of a local eatery suggests – it’s Faka Delicious!
