Well I can’t say anything about Venice that hasn’t already been written. Our excitement was overflowing as we entered. As expected, it was teeming with all sorts of boats, from cruise ships to oar-powered craft.
We stayed at Certosa Marina. Only our third marina in over 2 years. It was hectic coming in as we were expecting help from the marineros but had to go it alone. Just in time we saw that the channel we were going down had a closed bridge over it. I was able to back-out without hitting anything. Just! The cross wind didn’t help.
The public transport is all water borne. Quickly we sorted out week long tickets, the twins still free – bonus. The kids took everything in their stride and loved the vaperretos and running around. May is a pretty good month to come, as the weather is good, not too hot, and there’s not too many people around. We mostly wandered around juggling snack stops and shopping trips with sight seeing.
The island of Certosa was a great chilled oasis of greenery for us to come back to at the end of the day. We were right at the end of the island, which we liked, as it meant we were away from all the other boats and could make as much noise as we wanted. We also got a full walk through the park and trees when going into town. When you live on a boat, being around trees is a nice change.
So we stayed a week and got to see a lot of different places. The islands Murano and Burano were interesting to see. Only we didn’t hang out in Murano too long. It has street after street of craft hand-blown glass decorations and just about anything you can think of made out of glass. Kids going mental in a glass shop?!
Relaxing was also high on the agenda. Riding the water taxis and walking around all day got very tiring. On our last couple of nights a pizza van parked 50m away from the boat. So that was our dinner sorted. All happy. We loved our time in Venice. The fact that we could leave the throngs of people behind and retreat back into our own home made it all the more special.
