What we do on a passage

We just did our first overnight sail of the season. We left Siracusa, Sicily, last Thursday and arrived at Otranto on the Italian mainland on Saturday morning. So we were underway for 2 days and nights non-stop.

Time passes by very strangely underway. There are moments of relaxed bliss when time flies by. There are periods of boredom when time crawls, interspersed with moments of stress or even fear when things don’t go so well – unexpected squalls, stuff breaking, kids vomiting…

Here are some pics of stuff we do while on passage:

Practice with the sextant…

Take a hot shower as the engine makes our water extra hot. Here’s the view from the shower:

Play board games:

Catch up on sleep:

Pretend to be asleep:

Fix stuff on the go. Here Max is sewing a tear in the mainsail:

Play quietly:

Play boisterously, off course while tethered and in a lifejacket:

Stare into space vacantly, thinking things over and looking out for dolphins. We spotted loads on this trip!

And off course, read, watch films, and play on iPads. If it’s not too rough we do school work as well.
